DARRYL Westlake, the Sheffield United defender, says reaching April’s Johnstone’s Paint Trophy final would be a dream come true.

Speaking ahead of tonight’s Northern Area quarter-final at Coventry City, Westlake rubbished claims that progressing to the later stages of the tournament could hamper the visitors’ efforts to claw themselves out of League One.

Despite acknowledging the JPT has its detractors, the former Walsall full-back revealed: “It would mean everything to get to the final. You go into football to win trophies and to try and play at places like Wembley.

“There’s a

long way to go yet before we can start to consider that but who wouldn’t want to be involved in a match there?

“I know not everyone takes this competition seriously but I can assure you that nobody here thinks like that.

“We take every game seriously. We want to win every time we go out onto the pitch.”

United, who return to League One action against Carlisle this weekend, are fourth in the table and trail leaders Tranmere Rovers by three points.

Westlake added: “Promotion, first and foremost, is what we are aiming for and of course I’d take that above anything else.

“But there’s no reason why we couldn’t do both.”

Meanwhile, David Uns-worth could be set to return to Bramall Lane five years after leaving the club to join Wigan Athletic.

Unsworth, who also represented England, Everton and Burnley during his playing career, is understood to have been interviewed for a key post at United’s Shirecliffe youth academy as part of its response to the Elite Player Performance Plan.

Unsworth, aged 39, recently turned down the opportunity to take charge of Sligo Rovers after impressing in a coaching capacity with United’s divisional rivals, Preston North End. However, he left Deepdale following Graham Westley’s appointment as manager in January.

Unsworth made 34 appearances for United during the 2005/06 campaign which ended in promotion to the Premier League.
