Sheffield United: Don’t write us off

Confident: Uniteds Danny Wilson

DANNY Wilson, the Sheffield United manager, has warned it would be a grave mistake to write-off his team’s automatic promotion credentials.

United, whose leading scorer Nick Blackman is expected to be unveiled as a Reading player within the next 24 hours, have dropped from first to sixth in the League One table after failing to win any of their last four games.

That has prompted some to dismiss United’s chances of overhauling leaders Tranmere and Doncaster Rovers but Wilson, speaking ahead of Friday’s visit of Coventry City, said: “There’s no point in moping and whining because that doesn’t change anything.

“We’ve got good people and we’ll instil them with self-belief. They’ve got great backing from the supporters and the staff.

“We need more from the players, of course, we always do,” Wilson added. “And perhaps one or two more leaders too.”

Wilson hopes Barry Robson’s potential arrival at Bramall Lane, combined with the return of Neill Collins from injury, will help address that situation.

However, his immediate priority before tomorrow’s transfer deadline is trying to capture a new striker after predicting whoever “scores the most goals” will ultimately win the race for the Championship.

Barring any unforeseen hitches, Blackman will shortly complete his much-anticipated move to the Madejski Stadium for a fee in excess of £1m. Crystal Palace launched another bid for the 23-year-old yesterday but Reading were last night confident the lure of top-flight football would prove impossible to resist.
