MICHAEL Doyle, the Sheffield United captain, has revealed how a dressing room heart to heart proved the inspiration behind last weekend’s victory over Stevenage.
Danny Wilson’s side delivered arguably their most stylish performance of the season so far to dispatch Gary Smith’s men 4-1 and regain second place in the League One table.
Although the decision to deploy a four-,pronged attack - with Shaun Miller and Chris Porter at its apex - has been credited by some as the reason behind United’s dashing display, Doyle insisted a change in attitude rather than tactical approach was the actual catalyst.
“After losing at Milton Keynes we sat down and had a chat as a team,” he said.
“The manager also talked to us through the week as well. Everyone took what was being spoken about on board and that gave us a lot of confidence.
“Obviously, against Stevenage, we played with a lot of intensity and energy.
“When we had the ball we were using it much better than before.
“We know we’ve haven’t scored a high amount of goals lately and that’s been frustrating.
“But we did that against Stevenage and were also still physically strong.
“There’s been a big change in personnel but we’ve still got people here who playing like that suits better.”
With Miller’s former club, Crewe Alexandra, set to arrive at Bramall Lane this evening, Doyle added: “I think that result (4-1) has actually been coming for quite a while.
“I’ve felt that we are only a game or two away from gelling.
“Hopefully we can continue to improve and use that as a platform to push on from.”
Despite losing only once in 18 games and moving to within two points of leaders Tranmere Rovers, Doyle admitted he is “not satisfied” with United’s efforts so far.
“There have been quite a few Saturday evenings when we’ve come back from games and it’s been frustrating,” Doyle continued. “Because we’ve known we should have taken more points that we actually did.
“There’s still plenty of areas where we can improve and get better.
“I think people like myself, Kevin McDonald and Ryan Flynn can start chipping in with some more goals.
“Another is set-pieces because we conceded from one of those against Stevenage.”
“Actually, that was one of the things which pleased me the most afterwards,” Doyle added.
“Not that we conceded but that we came back from it and that showed a lot of character.
“Going in on the back of a disappointing result, a lot of teams could have crumbled after that but the lads didn’t.
“They kept on going and we in control right from the first whistle to the last and that was good to see because Stevenage are tough.”
