Sheffield United: Fixture pile-up worry for Blades

SHEFFIELD United are concerned about the prospect of a fixture pile-up, boss Danny Wilson has conceded.

The Blades were set to entertain Crawley Town on Tuesday but the League One encounter was called off because of a waterlogged pitch. The Bramall Lane playing surface failed a 1pm pitch inspection, with local match referee Anthony Tankard citing player safety as the main reason for calling it off.

No new date has yet been confirmed for the rearranged clash but United will now have to cram in another vital fixture into a small window.

Wilson has stated he will rotate his squad to cope with the log-jam as the club will be regularly playing three times a week between now and the end of the season. But the United chief insists he will not rush players on the sidelines through injury back into the first-team fold unless they have proven their fitness.

Neill Collins has recently returned to the side, having recovered from a triple fracture to his cheekbone, to boost Wilson’s defensive options while Matt Hill (fractured jaw) could also be recalled at Shrewsbury this weekend.

But Wilson said: “Playing so many games in a short space of time obviously places demands on the squad so we have to be careful with some of the lads coming back because the last thing we want is anyone breaking down again. But everyone will be used. We’ll have to use all the options within our squad. It’s not ideal. That goes without saying.

“But one consolation is that we’re not the only ones in this situation. Other teams around us are in the same boat too.”
