SHEFFIELD UNITED: Turning the screw

No mercy: Danny Wilson has set his sights on adding to the woes of Greg Abbott

No mercy: Danny Wilson has set his sights on adding to the woes of Greg Abbott

DANNY Wilson is aiming to crank up the pressure on his managerial counterpart Greg Abbott when Sheffield United return to league action at Carlisle United tomorrow.

Abbott, who masterminded the Cumbrians Johnstone’s Paint Trophy success in 2011, has been criticised by his own fans following their slump.

Having won just five times in 16 fixtures in all competitions at Brunton Park, Abbott is acutely aware he has to arrest the slide to hang on to his job.

Carlisle lie in 18th position, just four points above the drop zone, and were eliminated from the FA Cup by Bournemouth last weekend.

Wilson feels sympathy for Abbott and Carlisle’s plight, but does not plan on doing them any favours.

The United chief said: “Carlisle willl be desperate to put in a good performance and get a good result to lift themselves away from that bottom area. They are coming off the back of a home defeat so they will be sore. We will expect a bit of a backlash.

“We will go up there and, like every team, they will lift their game because they are facing Sheffield United. We have just got to make sure we do our jobs.”

Wilson expects Carlisle to be well organised and difficult to break down.

He added: “We have got to put as much pressure on them as we can.

“If we can start well and put them on the back foot straight away, we can put doubts in their minds.”
