Sheffield Wednesday: Helan back but Pugh still an asset

Owls signing: Jeremy Helan last week was expected to join Watford

Owls signing: Jeremy Helan last week was expected to join Watford

OWLS boss Dave Jones will have no regrets about signing Danny Pugh despite the surprise return of Jeremy Helan.

The Manchester City winger has been landed on loan for the rest of the season after a move to Watford failed to materialise.

Jones virtually gave up on keeping Helan last week and expected the Hornets to buy him.

The Owls boss took Pugh on loan from Leeds for the rest of the season after learning that he would be without Helan for Saturday’s game at Charlton.

But Pugh can play not only in Helan’s position on the left side of midfield - where he made his debut at The Valley - but also at left back or in central midfield, and is regarded by Jones as a good pro whose experience can bolster the squad. Wednesday recently allowed left back Daniel Jones to leave for Port Vale.

Wednesday have also parted company with Rodri, as expected. An agreement to cancel his contract by mutual consent clears the way for him to return to Spain. He has been linked with Real Zaragoza.

The Owls have been linked with Blackburn’s David Goodwillie and Birmingham’s Marlon King but it is understood that neither will be moving to Hillsborough. Owls duo Gary Madine and Chris O’Grady have been linked with Swindon and Notts County.
