Sheffield Wednesday: Loan starlet in safe hands

CONNOR Wickham has reassured Sunderland that he will be in safe hands if he is allowed to extend his Hillsborough stay.

The England Under-21 striker scored his first goal for the Owls a day after having to go to hospital for an x-ray after suffering a blow on the foot in training.

But the tests were all clear: he went on as a sub at Leicester and volleyed the winner in the 1-0 victory - the final game of his one-month loan.

Of the injury scare, Wickham said: “It settled down overnight. They’re looking after me. If you get injured, we have the right people to look after you. We maybe didn’t want to risk it from the start, but I came on, put the injury aside and we did what we needed to do. It was a solid performance by the boys.”

He admitted that his foot had been “quite sore”, but he stressed: “It was all just precautionary.”

Owls boss Dave Jones said if Sunderland agree to extend the loan he expected it to be on a week-to-week basis, with the Black Cats retaining the right of immediate recall.

It may not have helped the Owls’ chances of keeping Wickham when while he was making headlines for them, Sunderland were slipping to a fourth defeat in six games, at QPR, and contemplating an uncertain Premier League position. Wickham views the next step as being entirely in the hand of the clubs but says he would be happy to stay with Wednesday.

“I’m enjoying myself here, having a great time with a great bunch of lads,” he said. “The manager has shown a lot of faith in me and courage in taking me on; I hadn’t played in such a long time.”
