Sheffield Wednesday: Owls bid to retain loan duo

SHEFFIELD Wednesday are confident of retaining the services of Jeremy Helan and Mamady Sidibe in their fight for survival.

The Owls, fourth from bottom in the Championship, are locked in talks with Manchester City and Stoke City over extending the loan deals of Helan and Sidibe respectively.

The duo’s short-term contracts expired after the goalless draw with Wolves last Saturday.

Wednesday boss Dave Jones, who has watched his side fail to score in five out of the last six matches, has confirmed: “We are still in negotiations with the clubs; we will speak to them and see.”

France-born Helan has started 11 times for the Championship strugglers, scoring once. His versatility has been a major asset for Jones. Initially, Wednesday utilised Helan’s ability at left-back but, in recent weeks, the 20-year-old has performed well on the left-hand side of midfield.

Capped three times at under-19 level by his country, Helan also enjoyed a loan spell at Shrewsbury Town earlier on in the 2012/13 season.

Sidibe, an unused substitute against Wolves, has made 10 appearances, including six starts, since moving to Hillsborough on a temporary basis. The Malian striker grabbed his first goal in nearly three years in the Boxing Day victory at Bolton Wanderers.

Dogged by injuries during his time at Stoke, Sidibe, aged 33, had not played a senior match for more than two years until he joined the Owls on loan.
