Sheffield Wednesday: Owls match set for all-clear

THE OWLS’ match at Charlton on Saturday looks set to go ahead.

Volunteers have helped to clear the pitch of snow, and temperatures have risen.

The Addicks on Tuesday expressed concern about the fixture because of the snow and a forecast that the freeze-up would continue.

Twenty five volunteers responded to an appeal for aid in shifting 110 tonnes of snow from the pitch and from other areas around the stadium.

Their work and a thaw over the last 24 hours have inspired confidence that the match will be played, Charlton club said today.

Covers have been placed on the pitch, and the local council are clearing surrounding streets and footpaths.

Head of operations Mick Everett said: “After plenty of hard work over the past 36 hours or so, things are looking much more encouraging for Saturday’s match, although we’re still keeping a close eye on the weather forecasts.”

He thanked the volunteers, the council, and the club’s shirt sponsors for providing heaters to help keep out any frost.
