Sheffield Wednesday: Reda set to miss next two games

Ankle injury: Reda Johnson suffered a three-month absence during the first half of the season

REDA Johnson is set to miss the Owls’ next two matches.

A specialist in France judged that there was nothing seriously wrong with his ankle but he needed a two-week break from football.

The defender is then scheduled to begin possibly a week of full training before he is back in contention for a place.

He is poised to missed Saturday’s home game against Derby and the trip to Birmingham on Tuesday, February 19, but Dave Jones will hope to have him back for a home match against Crystal Palace on Saturday, February 23.

There is no game a week on Saturday as opponents Millwall will be playing in the FA Cup.

Jones said: “It’s obviously a blow to lose Reda; we want all our big-hitters around. We want him fit as a soon as possible.

“I had hoped he would be available for the Birmingham game but it doesn’t look as if we’re going to get that.”

Johnson missed last week’s 3-1 win against Brighton. His ankle, which caused him a three-month lay-off earlier in the season, became sore again after he suffered a heavy fall during the previous week’s 2-1 win at Charlton, where he also headed the equaliser.

He went to Marseille, where he was born, to see a specialist who is well known to French players and highly regarded.

Owls physio Paul Smith said: “We’re managing Reda based on his symptoms. After that fall at Charlton he felt he needed a period of rest, which we agreed with.

“The specialist’s opinion was that he should have a couple of weeks’ relative rest - though he will still be working hard on non-weight-bearing activity.

“He’ll have had a period of rest already, so in 10 days’ time we’ll start building him up then get him into some sort of condition to get back into it.”
