DAVE Jones, the Sheffield Wednesday manager, is bemoaning his team’s bad luck after their losing streak was extended to seven matches by Bristol City on Saturday.
At times the Owls were their own worst enemies as they conceded two penalties and were penalised for protesting too vigorously in the closing minutes just before Gary Madine slammed home what would have been a dramatic late equaliser.
But Jones, who insists he is the man to steer Wednesday to Championship safety, believes fate is against his team at the moment.
He said: “It was a prime example of when your luck is out, it is out. For 84 minutes it was in.
“And then for whatever reason in those six minutes is a killer blow for everyone at the club. If we had a bit more composure and care. It should have been well out of sight.
“While it’s 2-1 we give them hope.”
Wednesday had missed a host of chances to make the match safe before the Robins scored twice in the final four minutes to snatch the win.
Jones says he can understand the supporters’ frustrations, because he feels them too.
He said: “I get frustrated when we get in a good position and the pass isn’t there or the shot doesn’t hit the target.
“I see everything and feel everything that everyone else feels. Whether you’re a coach or in the stand or a substitute.
“I get frustrated like everyone else. But I’m part of them (the team), so you keep working through them.
“We are a ‘we.’ We’re not an ‘I.’ Whatever goes on we’re all in it together.
“If we misplace a pass then we’re in it together.
“We worked so hard (last week) to get in those positions and then we did, for whatever reason, that little bit of composure and quality let us down.
“We should have been well out of sight because for a spell of 20 minutes in that second half it was one way traffic.”
Wednesday face fitness concerns this week over winger Jermaine Johnson (hamstring) and striker Chris O’Grady (foot).
Both were withdrawn for the Bristol match before the visitors levelled.
