Vokes exit as Blades have change of heart
Sam Vokes
SHEFFIELD United have elected not to extend Sam Vokes’ loan after re-assessing the attacking options at manager Micky Adams’ disposal.
Vokes, who scored one goal in six appearances for the South Yorkshire club after arriving on a short-term basis from Wolverhampton Wanderers, had been expected to remain at Bramall Lane until the end of the season.
But despite indicating he would offer Vokes a new deal when his initial agreement expired following last weekend’s win over Leeds, Adams has now waved goodbye to the Wales international.
Darius Henderson’s return from suspension – the former Watford centre-forward is available for selection when United resume their battle for Championship survival at Queens Park Rangers on April 4 – appears to have prompted the change of heart.
“Darius is ready again for our next match,” a source close to United told The Star. “And that made us look again at the situation.
“We’ve got him, Ched Evans, Daniel Bogdanovic, Richard Cresswell and Marcus Bent already here so there is plenty there. It’s a shame that Sam will be going back - especially now that we’ve got him fit again – but he was initially brought in as cover.”
With the window for loan signings scheduled to close tomorrow, Vokes is now expected to report back for duty at Molineux following Wales’ Euro 2012 qualifier with England on Saturday.
Financial considerations are also likely to have influenced United’s decision to part company.
Henderson, who was sent off less than half an hour into his comeback from injury at Vicarage Road earlier this month, is one of the highest earners among Adams’ squad.
United are 22nd in the table with eight matches remaining after beating Leeds United 2-0 at Bramall Lane last Saturday.

Friday, March 25, 2011 at 02:13 PMPost 6 "....you scrubby lot". You are Oscar Wilde reborn. In case you didn't realise, I am being sarcastic. When I read your posts I am honestly confused about your age, as on the one hand you occasionally use syntax that indicates you have a modicum of intelligence, but on the othr you seem to have the wit and imagination of a 9 year old. And not a particularly bright one. And not only that, accusing others of scrubberiness (is that a word) whilst supporting a club that has a catchment area including Parson Cross .........

Friday, March 25, 2011 at 09:11 AMpost6, do you really believe the bilge you have just said?....please show where we are in hock to the back for £300m? our bank debt is £18m which those nice people at WHU are paying for us! SWFC and SUFC are in the same boat, we owe money to the man at the top, and by the end of this season it will be roughly the same, your Chairman has already indicated that the club lost 6-7million by not being promoted this season, where exactly do you think it came from, and do you honestly think it will be written off? not to mention the £10m he's already paid to write down your debt.......as for the story itself, I am quite diappointed that Vokes isn't staying but we had 6 players on loan that were in or around the first team, one would have to be left out (and still be paid) so it makes sense to allow someone to go back,

Thursday, March 24, 2011 at 08:23 AMA few days ago it was trebles all round in the board room as we had him to the end of the season. Well, proof if proof is needed that McCabe is now bored with his toy.

Thursday, March 24, 2011 at 07:10 AM@2 You will find that our club is in fact debt free and our owner unlike your is not hocked up to the banks for about 300 million. You will also find we do not have any court orders against us either why might you ask is this? ... Well its because SWFC were an attractive proposition with a massive upside and huge support potential unlike you scrubby lot. Face facts dude you are NEVER going to get bought by anyone as McSue wants his cash back so you are gradually being sucked back to Div 4 where you belong. The only part of your post that is correct is that you will probably be in administration by the end of the year which will be a disgrace to Sheffield football. Face facts your skint .... @5 Bladesman That about sums you lot up...

Wednesday, March 23, 2011 at 04:45 PMMassive short sighted decision by the club, but that just about sums up Sheffield United. I will not be renewing my ST for next year.

Wednesday, March 23, 2011 at 03:57 PMGirona, I think you're right. Did anyone other than MA seriously think that Bent was anything other than a ridiculousdesparate signing? I know finances are critically poor, but what are Vokes wages against the cost of dropping into Div 3? As I said before, I think this shows that the club regard relegation as a certainty. PS I bet MA brings Collins back in to the side at the first opportunity!

Wednesday, March 23, 2011 at 02:27 PMUnfortunately, finances have dictated this move. I suspect Vokes wage was funded by Jordan leaving for Huddersfield but now he has returned the budget just doesn't balance. If Adams is begging for extra funds then he will probably be looking for a centre-back given the injuries to Collins and Ertl. If anything the mistake is that of Adams (not McCabe) as he signed Bent until the end of the season. I said it was a very poor signing at the time but he is a very high wage earner that couldn't even sit on the bench last week because we had too many loans. If we could I am sure we would be keeping Vokes and sending Bent back but Birmingham don't want him and don't have to take him.

Wednesday, March 23, 2011 at 02:18 PMIs it April fools day already? I thought Comic Reielf was last week? This must be a joke but this is united we're talking about. Why would anyone get rid of one of their best players for someone who has been injured all season, not match fit and has been sent off 6 times while playing at united. It's beyond belief but what would you expect from a chairman who would rather save as much money as possible than save unied from relegation. You would think he would be doing everything he could to keep united up, however since relegation from the PL, it has been mistake after mistake. Finally, people talk about overseas owners taking over club just so that can make a quick buck and take money out of the club, just look at ours. Where has it all gone? Knowing our luck, we could be in adminstration by the end of May and liquidated by June. Compared this to the other side of the city who endlessly have court orders around them but manage to escape.

Wednesday, March 23, 2011 at 11:46 AMVery short sighted. Vokes had a good game on Saturday. Henderson, although a good player, remains an accident waiting to happen and will probably miss some of the remaining games through injury or suspension and Bent is a waste of a squad number. This suggests to me that the club, despite making noises to the contrary, have accepted relegation as inevitable and feel that continuing to pay Vokes' wages is a waste of money. I suppose it may be that the plan is to strengthen elsewhere, but with only a day before the loan window shuts, that doesn't seem likely.
