Marc Lefebvre hasn’t given up on a coaching job at Sheffield Steelers.

The 31-year-old Canadian, who coached at Dayton Demonz of the Federal Hockey League in Ohio, last season, had been an outside candidate for the job eventually handed to Doug Christiansen.

Christiansen has failed to re-appoint outgoing coach Ryan Finnerty’s right-hand man Neil Abel - and, like senior defenceman Rod Sarich, has effectively kept him dangling on the end of the phone line.

That has encouraged Lefebvre, who wants to return to the UK, where he had spells at Coventry Blaze, Edinburgh Capitals and Steelers.

Meanwhile Sheffield captain Jonathan Phillips has faith in Christiansen’s wait and see policy over signings.

“I wouldn’t want to play poker against Doug” he said. “He holds his nerve, has faith in his own convictions and will ensure we get the best players at the best price. I’m glad he’s doing that job not me. I don’t know if I’d have the nerve to turn down good players believing better were around the corner.”
