Sheffield RUFC have made history after receiving two of this year’s RFU President’s XV Awards.
Sheffield became the first club in the Yorkshire and North East area to receive two of the President’s Awards, which reward clubs who have set the highest standards across 15 categories.
The Abbeydale club received both the ‘Player Retention’ and ‘Quality Coaching’ awards - and the two £500 first prizes - from John Owen, the past president of the RFU atSheffield’s annual dinner earlier this month.
John said: “Sheffield have identified the issue of young players drifting away from the game in their late teens and put in place structures to ensure that at every level players feel fully integrated within the club.
“Their approach to Colts rugby and that crucial transition into senior rugby has been a major contributor to the retention initiatives.
Their interaction with students, both their own and young people coming into the city, has been another key success, for which they can be very proud.
“Top-level coaching obviously helps create greater enjoyment for players and in this regard Sheffield have also emerged as the country’s best.”
Sheffield chairman Andrew Langdale added: “These award are recognition for the whole club and I’m delighted.
“To be picked out from hundreds of nominations was quite an accolade, and something we’re thrilled to receive.”
