Sheffield United’s negotiations with Ben Davies have reached an advanced stage after the midfielder parted company with Derby County.
Davies, who enjoyed a successful spell on loan with Nigel Clough’s squad last season, is holding talks about a permanent move to South Yorkshire following the expiry of his contract at the iPro Stadium.
Clough, the United manager, confirmed he wanted to sign the 33-year-old at the end of last season while Davies, who made 20 appearances after being allowed to leave County on a temporary basis, reciprocated by expressing a desire to push the transfer through.
Although several other clubs are known to have been monitoring his situation in the Midlands, Bramall Lane’s hierarchy are confident of reaching an agreement shortly.
Davies is understood to have been informed his deal with the Championship play-off finalists was unlikely to be renewed before being approached by Clough during United’s preparations for February’s victory over Gillingham.
