Nigel Clough has drawn-up a short-list of three potential signings as Sheffield United prepare to enter the emergency loan market, writes James Shield.

The Star understands that Billy Clarke, who enjoyed a brief spell on loan in South Yorkshire three years ago, is among those being considered after Crawley Town’s chief executive Michael Dunford warned “painful” and “unpopular” cutbacks must be made to reduce expenditure at the Checkatrade.com Stadium.

However Clarke is not the only would-be target identified by Clough and his coaching staff ahead of tomorrow’s crucial League One encounter against fellow strugglers Shrewsbury Town with talks aimed at establishing the availability of at least two other players believed to have taken place since Tuesday’s FA Cup success over Fulham.

“We have to take some inspiration from what we did down there,” Clough, whose side are 23rd in the table, said. “Because the league, getting ourselves out of the position we’re in, is priority.”

Clough received permission to strengthen his squad after allowing the likes of Lyle Taylor and Febian Brandy to depart on a temporary basis.
