Nigel Clough, the Sheffield United manager, paid tribute to his players’ courage after watching them record their 10th straight win.

Jose Baxter’s first-half goal settled last night’s fixture against Carlisle and moved Clough’s team to within eight points of sixth-placed Peterborough.

United visibly tired towards the end of their fourth match since the turn of the month but held on to secure a landmark victory.

“It’s unbelievable, remarkable, call it what you will,” Clough said. “I’m running out of superlatives for these lads. They’re absolutely shattered in there but, as we’ve all agreed in the dressing room, it’s worth it for the feeling you get when something like this happens.

“It takes a lot of character, heart and desire to achieve what they’ve just done. And the great thing is, they all want to carry it on.

“Some of them were dead on their feet out there but they kept on going and going. But, and this is important, everyone in the squad has contributed to this run at some stage and it’s important that’s not forgotten.”

United, 10th in the table with a game in hand on their rivals from London Road, return to action at Preston North End on Monday.

“We’re further away from the bottom than before,” Clough said. “And that’s pleasing. That’s the first place we’ve always looked.”

United, whose defence has not been breached in over 12 hours of football, triumphed when Baxter pounced after 28 minutes.

Jamie Murphy, Stefan Scougall and Ryan Flynn also went close for the Blades as they pressed for another.
