Andy Garner has revealed Sheffield United would “love” to sign John Brayford on a permanent basis despite warning it will be “difficult” to keep the on-loan defender at Bramall Lane, writes James Shield.

Brayford has been in sparkling form since arriving from Cardiff City but is scheduled to rejoin the Premier League club at the end of the season.

Garner, United’s first team coach, told The Star: “If he’s not part of Cardiff’s plans then it would be nice if we could keep John.

“Perhaps the money we are making from the (FA) cup could be used to put something together, I don’t know. Really ‘maybe’ is all we can say but we’d certainly love him here, that’s for sure.”

Garner, speaking ahead of tonight’s League One fixture at Gillingham, added: “It will always be very difficult (financially) and also it depends on Cardiff’s circumstances because, if they do go down, then John is proven in the Championship. They’ll know how well he’s done.

“John is an unbelievable player and it’s unbelievable really that we got him here.

“We worked with him at Derby and he couldn’t wait to link-up with the gaffer (Nigel Clough) again. That was a factor.”
