Sheffield Wednesday will look to extend the loan spell of Damián Martínez when the goalkeeper’s temporary stay at Hillsborough expires on New Year’s Day.

The 21-year-old ‘keeper has made five appearances for the Owls, after dislodging the previously ever-present Chris Kirkland from between the posts.

Martínez wants to extend his stay from the Gunners - and Wednesday are poised to approach the North London giants with a proposal to keep the Argentinian until the end of the season.

“I’m pleased he wants to stay,” said caretaker manager Stuart Gray.

“But I have to give credit to Chris, too. Obviously he’s disappointed because he’s not in the team.

“But he’s a top professional and he’s been very helpful, giving Damián lots of advice.”

Wednesday close out 2013 with two games on the road, visiting Blackburn on Boxing Day and Charlton on December 29. They then face a tough January, coming up against the likes of Blackpool, Leeds United, Burnley and Queens Park Rangers.

Nottingham Forest, meanwhile, are interested in Owls loan striker Connor Wickham, sources in the Midlands have suggested.

Wickham is scheduled to return to Sunderland in January.
