Sheffield Wednesday will fear a long lay-off for Jose Semedo after the midfield player was carried off during last night’s 3-0 defeat by Wigan at Hillsborough and taken to hospital with an ankle injury.

Manager Stuart Gray said he did not want to jump to conclusions and would await the outcome of x-rays.

But Semedo lay hurt for six minutes on the Hillsborough pitch, amid worries that he had suffered a serious problem, before he was stretchered off in the second half when the Owls were two down.

Gray said: “I think he’s gone to tackle with his left foot and his right leg has collapsed underneath him. It’s around the ankle.”

He admitted: “Semi’s not one to lay on the surface.

“When certain individuals are lying down you don’t have to wait for the ref to blow the whistle – a physio can run straight on, and that’s Semi’s personality.”

Gray also revealed that Glenn Loovens was still not fit for last night’s game, owing to his hamstring injury.

He said of the match, which ended the Owls’ unbeaten run after 11 games: “We didn’t put away the two chances we had early doors.

“I’m disappointed that we didn’t get it right in both boxes, attacking-wise and defending.

“Between the boxes we did ok, had decent possession on a difficult pitch, the same pitch for both teams.

“There were two good opportunities that we had.

“We needed to get that first goal. Wigan are a quality side.

“Unfortunately the run has to come to an end. We’re disappointed to lose at home, especially 3-0.

“I’ve said to the players, we put that away now and concentrate on the Charlton game.”
