Sheffield Wednesday: Afobe targets happy return

Owls' Benik Afobe

Owls' Benik Afobe

Benik Afobe will hope to face Huddersfield for the first time since his successful loan spell with them.

Wednesday’s loan striker from Arsenal spent much of the 2010-11 season on loan with the Terriers.

He scored eight goals for them and at one stage won four Man of the Match awards in a row.

It was the season when the Terriers extended an unbeaten run to 24 games and narrowly missed out on promotion to the Championship: they lost to Peterborough in the play-off final.

Since then he has been on loan at Millwall, Bolton and Reading and suffered and overcome a serious knee injury.

Afobe will be keen to regain his Owls place after being moved down to the bench for Tuesday’s match against Derby, following three starts against Barnsley, Reading - where he scored - and Wigan.

Stuart Gray fielded Leon Best as a lone central striker on Tuesday but has Afobe and Atdhe Nuhiu hoping for starts.

Gray also favours, ideally, using two strikers from the start and sending on two fresh ones during the second half.

So Afobe is likely to have some part to play tomorrow.

Gray said: “All the players are chomping at the bit. The 11 who started against Derby were a happy bunch,,I had eight or nine disgruntled ones.

“The Huddersfield game is the most important now; the subs will play a big part as well.

“I also have to have one eye on that Monday tie against Charlton. The good thing is that apart from Adedeji Oshilaja. the loan lads aren’t cup-tied, so they can all come into my thought process.”
