Wednesday have exercised their right to recall Caolan Lavery from Plymouth at 24 hours’ notice.
The Owls agreed to the striker’s loan being extended by a month when it was due to end on New Year’s Day.
But the recall clause gave them the option to bring him back.
Lavery admitted recently that he had thought he would be returning to Hillsborough straight after his initial loan spell ended.
A Plymouth spokesman said: “While we are disappointed Caolan has been recalled, we fully appreciate the situation and are grateful to Wednesday for allowing him to join us and wish him all the best on his return to Hillsborough.“
Lavery joined the Pilgrims in November and scored three goals for John Sheridan’s side.
