Owls defender Oguchi Onyewu looks destined to miss out on playing in next month’s World Cup in Brazil.
The tall centre-back, who has twice previously taken part in the showpiece tournament, was not included in USA’s preliminary 30-man training squad, which was named by coach Jurgen Klinsmann yesterday. Midfielder Stuart Holden, who enjoyed a brief loan spell at Hillsborough during the 2012/13 campaign, also missed the cut.
“We had some difficult decisions to make, and we are very excited about the 30 players coming into camp,” Klinsmann said.
It was a week ago Wednesday confirmed that they plan on holding talks with Onyewu’s representatives over extending his short-term contract as his deal runs out this summer. Before the end of the Championship season, Onyewu told The Star he may make a decision on his future before the World Cup starts.
Meanwhile, striker Leroy Lita, who notched six goals while on loan at Wednesday last season, has been released by Swansea City. Lita, a £1.75 million signing from Middlesbrough in 2011, made a meagre six starts for the Swans.
