Six-hit city slickers help clinch title glory

SHEFFIELD'S super six have helped Yorkshire achieve a championship first.

Sheffield Hallam Civica's Andy Dixon, Callum Moore, Richard Marshall, Ben Stoney and Rupert Allison and Sheffield University Bankers' Will Lobo, were part of the Under-21 men's squad that clinched National title glory.

Impressive wins over Cheshire and Lancashire by 7-3 and 6-1 respectively at the Regional Championships at Abbeydale last month, saw them qualify for the Nationals in Manchester.

They opened up with a 4-0 victory over Gloucester in which Rotherham's Nick Fletcher scored one of the goals, and then Marshall notched a double and Moore added another in the 5-2 defeat of Essex. Fletcher was again on target in the 2-1 win over Warwickshire which assured Yorkshire of the title.

Allison, Stoney and Marshall all featured on the scoresheet in the final match against Sussex which ended in a 4-4 draw.

James Ross of Sheffield University Bankers who shared the coaching role with Doncaster Hockey Club's Gawaine Hogg and Gareth Tyler of Sheffield Civica, said: "I'm very proud of all the players, coaching staff and management.

"It's the first time Yorkshire have won the tournament since it began in the mid-1980s and with a very young squad, I'm hopeful they'll stay together for next season."A special mention must go to physiotherapist Kay Robinson (Doncaster HC) who kept everybody moving. So many players had cramp in the hot conditions and if it wasn't for her then we wouldn't have finished with a full team on the pitch."

A number of Doncaster players featured in the squad. It was skippered by Greg Vickers and goalkeeper Jack Pendlebury was named Player of the Tournament while others involved were

John Appleton, Joe Morrison, Andy Appleton and Tim Shelley.

The manager was Ann Marshall of Sheffield Ladies while Doncaster's Mike Vickers was assistant manager.
