Amateur potter Mitchell Travis has today secured the biggest win of his fledgling career after beating world number six Marco Fu 6-5 in the first round of the UK Championship.

The 21-year-old, who hopes to turn pro next year, battled back from five frames to four down to see off the Australian Open title winner.

Gleadless-born cueman Travis, one of seven amateur players to be given a place in the revamped tournament after a corresponding number of players from the professional tour chose not to enter, will face Kurt Maflin in the second round at York’s Barbican Centre.

Fellow Sheffielder Adam Duffy is also through to the last 64 after defeating Barry Pinches 6-5.
