Carry on Shane. That’s the call from Sheffield Tigers speedway fans for rider who’s really setting Owlerton alight.
Popular Aussie Shane Parker is riding superbly in his one and only season in Sheffield colours which has prompted calls from supporters begging him to delay his retirement.
But Parker is sticking to his plan and will finally quit speedway in October after a career in the UK spanning 20 years.
“When I signed for Sheffield they knew it would be for only this season and it feels the right time for me to go,” he said.
“I’m enjoying myself and it would be wonderful for me to go out on a high with some silverware for Sheffield and we have been riding pretty well.
“I hear fans coming up to me all the time saying I should carry on for another year but it’s not just about me it’s about my family and we have a plan which we are sticking to.
“I’ve really enjoyed this season with Sheffield and I think the fans can see I have always given it my best. Just because I’m retiring it doesn’t mean I’m sitting back and taking an easy ride, I’ve been getting stuck in.”
Parker is now aiming to play his part in Tigers’ bid for national glory in the Premier League Fours at Leicester on Sunday (5pm).
He is joined by Ricky Ashworth, Josh Auty and Emiliano Sanchez in their line-up for the Group Two clashes against Redcar, Workington and Ipswich.
Before that Parker and Co. look to maintain their Premier League title push against Berwick Bandits at Owlerton tonight (7.45pm) in a meeting that celebrates the input of former Sheffield promoter Tim Lucking.
Lee Complin and Josef Franc lead the Bandits and will be strongly supported by former Elite League riders Sebastian Alden, Ludvic Lindgren and Kossa Smith.
Tigers team: Josh Auty 8.20, Hugh Skidmore 5.81, Ricky Ashworth 8.14, Emiliano Sanchez 6.06, Shane Parker 8.19, Simon Lambert 4.98, Ashley Birks 3.59.
There will be no meeting at Owlerton next Thursday as Tigers travel to Ipswich.
