TIGERS aim to make up for the agony of missing out on the League Cup when they face Newcastle in tonight’s Knockout Cup clash at Owlerton (7.45).
It was the Diamonds who pipped them to the post for runners-up spot in the northern group and Sheffield are now hoping to gain revenge tonight and in Sunday’s return leg.
Sheffield owner Neil Machin knows that his side will need to establish a healthy lead to take to Brough Park.
He said: “We will obviously be looking for a good lead in the first leg if we are to progress, but the Diamonds have recently recorded some thumping wins, including a demolition of Redcar that saw them qualify ahead of us in the League Cup. That just proves their capabilities and potential.
“The Newcastle team are rapid from the start line which will always create a superb spectacle here at Owlerton and their strength at reserve with the Worrall boys in such prolific form will undoubtedly expose any weaknesses we may have. We are going to need to be firing on all cylinders as a unit, from Heat 1 until 15.”
The away side have a powerful side and possess the league’s surprise package at reserve in Richie Worrall, Great Britain’s only representative in the World U21 Final - but Tigers racer Ricky Wells knows the Diamonds have top end strength too. He said: “Robbo (Stuart Robson) and Lemo (Mark Lemon) are really experienced at this level and they’re still scoring points at the top, and their middle order is really solid too.
“Obviously they’ve got the two brothers at reserve who are going good, so you can see why they were one of the pre-season favourites this year.”
