SIMON Stead wants to start enjoying his speedway again after years of pressure at the top level.

Stead is all set for an emotional return to hometown club Sheffield after winning the Elite League title with Swindon last season.

And he says the enjoyment factor is most important as he looks to pile up the points for Tigers a decade after leaving the club as a youngster.

He said: “It’s a tough game, this. The pressure is intense when you are in the Elite League and the World Cup but part of the reason I wanted to come back to Sheffield was because I want to enjoy myself again.

“It’s perfect for me, to be so close to home on a Thursday night and my friends and family will be coming down to watch. I find when I am enjoying myself I tend to race better. There were times last season when it was all getting a bit much, I went through a bad spell and my team place was on the line at Swindon.

“But I pulled through all that with some hard work and determination and I’m proud of the part I played in the play-offs to win the title with them.

“Now I want to try and enjoy my racing and having more meetings will help because I’m doubling up between Sheffield and King’s Lynn. For me to have King’s Lynn as a home track on a Wednesday and then come to Sheffield as my other home track on a Thursday is great.

“It also means I won’t have to be spending time at airports riding in Poland and Sweden all the time; there is no fun in that because that’s when it’s more of a job.

“I’m very lucky to have this opportunity to ride for Sheffield again and I’m happy to be captain. I want to see the smile back on people’s faces at the club.”
