Gutsy Sheffield Tigers left it late against Redcar before eventually recording a 46-44 victory to keep their League Cup dreams alive.
Having been behind throughout the meeting, the Tigers took the lead for the first time at the end of the final race as Simon Stead and Leigh Lanham performed last heat heroics at Owlerton in what was a must-win encounter.
From the moment Aaron Summers and Jan Graversen fended off skipper Stead to put the visitors six up in heat six, the Tigers were fighting to regain control of the meeting and their cup destiny.
Yet reserve Andre Compton claimed two big race wins in heats 12 and 14 to bring the sides level and set up a tense last heat decider – and Stead and Lanham duly delivered.
After recovering from a tough start, Stead reeled off three vital race wins from the No.1 spot to spark a Tigers comeback.
Joe Screen’s men will now travel to Redcar for the return fixture this evening looking to win by seven points or more to overhaul the Bears at the top of their group and put themselves in pole position for progression.
