Speedway: Haines ready for top five

JOE Haines says he’s ready to meet the challenge of racing in Sheffield’s top five.

Haines has admitted his move to Owlerton last year salvaged his flagging career and he scored plenty of points at reserve.

Now he is set to line up fourth in the Tigers averages ahead of new signings Facundo Albin, Jake Knight and Damien Koppe.

Said Haines: “I know it will be harder in the top five but I really feel my career is back on track after enjoying last season at Sheffield.

“I’m delighted to see Simon Stead and Richard Hall back at the club and I’m looking forward to seeing them in the team.

“For my career to progress I need to score points in the main body of the Sheffield team. That’s the aim and it would be great if I could put a point at least on my average.”

Haines also feels the Tigers team can be one of the big surprises of next season’s Premier League.

“We’ve got a balance between experience in Steady and Richard and then the younger lads,” said Haines.

“I certainly feel we can improve as the season goes on and if we can push for the play-offs anything can happen in September and October.

“We have to look to win our home meetings and I see no reason why we can’t do that.”
