Sheffield’s youngsters were edged out in a last heat decider by National League glamour boys Cradley at Owlerton.
In a break from Premier League action, Tigers reserves Arthur Sisiss and Nathan Greaves took advantage of some extra track time - but their contributions weren’t quite enough.
Sisiss picked up his first win of the evening as he stormed to victory ahead of Cradley’s Ashley Morris in heat one in a fast time. David Speight held off Ben Basford for third as the Tigers opened with a 4-2.
The Heathens moved in front with a 5-1 after their reserve pairing of Layne Cupitt and Bradley Andrews outgated the Tigers duo in heat two.
Jack Smith and Jack Parkinson-Blackburn settled in behind Luke Chessell in heat three and Morris in heat five either side of a win for Nathan Greaves in a trio of successive shared races.
Speight was disqualified for exceeding the two minute time allowance in heat six and was replaced by Chris Widman. The Sheffield No. 6 finished ahead of Cupitt while Sissis made a lightning start off the inside to coast to victory and level the scores.
It was Greaves who flew to the chequered flag in the seventh as a 4-2 with Widman saw the Tigers regain a two point lead. Further machinery problems for Speight saw three riders only take part in heat eight as Basford and Bradley Andrews got the Heathens back in front with a 5-1 away from the tapes.
Sissis missed the gate in the tenth but wound it on and chased hard before diving underneath Chessell on bend one of the third lap.
Heat 11 saw Basford spin round on bend one and with nowhere to go, Widman ploughed into the Cradley No.2 forcing both riders to withdraw from the meeting.
The Heathens moved further in front in heat 12 as Cupitt made the most of an engine failure suffered by Lawlor on the entrance to the third lap to snatch a 4-2.
A super start from Smith and Lawlor saw the Tigers grab an unexpected 5-1 in heat 14 to take the clash down to a last heat decider.
Sissis and Greaves missed the jump and while chasing Morris hard, Greaves came to grief on the exit of bend three awarding the Heathens with a final heat maximum.
Tigers head to league leaders Glasgow on Sunday in Premier League action.
