Sport In Brief: Wild about St Leger

GODOLPHIN handler Mahmood Al Zarooni is looking to crown an excellent first season as a trainer with victory in the £500,000 Group One Ladbrokes St Leger with Rewilding, who heads 16 remaining entries for the world's oldest Classic at Doncaster on Saturday, September 11.

Rewilding is the 7/4 favourite for the race sponsor after a comprehensive four-length triumph in the leading trial, the Group Two Great Voltigeur Stakes at York on August 17.

The Ed Dunlop-trained Snow Fairy, a 5/1 chance with Ladbrokes, has already tasted Classic glory in both the English and Irish Oaks this season and is bidding to become the first filly to win the St Leger since User Friendly in 1992.

Aidan O'Brien, Ireland's champion trainer, has landed success on three occasions and he's set to launch another strong challenge with Midas Touch (7/1), Joshua Tree (10/1), Cape Blanco (10/1), Flying Cross (33/1), Await The Dawn (50/1) and Bright Horizon (200/1) while Mark Tompkins, who trains in Newmarket, has had the St Leger in mind all season for Ted Spread (25/1).

The four-day Festival runs from Wednesday, September 8 to Saturday, September 11.

Going to Barbados ...

Three members of the Sheffield-based GB Boxing's women's Olympic squad are Barbados bound after being selected for the forthcoming World Championships.

Flyweight Nicola Adams, lightweight Amanda Coulson and welterweight Savannah Marshall, who train at the English Institute of Sport, all gained a call up for England at the prestigious event from September 7-19.

They will be joined by bantamweight Sharon Holford, from Greasborough who trains at the Aspire Boxing Club, Darnall under the guidance of Ronnie Tucker.

Open woe for potter

Sheffield's teenage snooker player Joel Walker failed to qualify for the new World Open in Glasgow later this month.

The highly-rated 16-year-old needed to win three matches to qualify for his first ranking tournament but fell at the second hurdle with a 3-1 defeat to veteran Maltese cueman Tony Drago at the World Snooker Academy at the English Institute of Sport. He beat Julian Logue 3-1 in his opening qualifier.

There was good news, however, for Sheffield-based Judd Trump who clinched a place in the World Open with an emphatic 3-0 victory over Thailand's Thanawat Thirapongpaiboon in the final qualifying round. The tournament runs from September 18-26 at the Scottish Exhibition Centre.

On track for second

Becky Chambers took a superb second place when she represented England in the Irish National Track Championships in Tullamore.

At 12 years old the City of Sheffield's Under-13 National race walking champion was one of the youngest competitors in the Under-14 2,000m event but she finished just nine seconds behind the winner, in a personal best time of 10 minutes 59 seconds. England came away with a one point victory overall.

George shows his teeth

Borussia Teeth continue to remain off top spot in the LeisureLeagues Sheffield 6-a-side league courtesy of goal difference as they eased to a 4-0 victory over Marambitsvina. George Poulton was again outstanding for the winners.

PSV Hangover finally recorded their first maximum points haul of the campaign as Thomas Newsone proved the difference in a 2-1 win over Wincobank United while Matthew Brown was influential for Oxo's Pathetic in their hard fought 4-3 victory over Pukka Blues FC.
