SPORT IN BRIEF: Hit and miss for Steel in badminton finals

Sheffield players featured in all five finals, winning three of them, in the Yorkshire Badminton Association Under-17 Closed tournament at Concord Sports Centre.

In the boys A singles Matthew Steel (Thomas Rotherham College) won his three group matches and beat Martin Drabble (All Saints) 15-12, 11-15, 15-10 in the semi-final but lost out in the final to York's Oliver Cohen. The two teamed up to clinch the doubles title. Matthew also contested the mixed doubles final with Rachel Kershaw (Stocksbridge) but they were defeated by a Leeds pairing in a thrilling three-setter.

Martha Jones (Meadowhead) finished runner-up in the girls A singles after she'd come through a nailbiting group decider against Harriet West (High Storrs) 12-15, 15-12, 15-12. Holly Watson (Sheffield HS) and Leeds' Chrissie Nettleton won the doubles with a 17-15, 15-10victory over Lucy Farmer (King Ecgbert) and Jennie Dickson (Harrogate) in the final.

USA fencing visit

Sheffield welcomed representatives from the USA Olympic team to the city, the second visit by USA representatives to take place this month.

The Executive Director Kurt Aichele and Bob Largman, Team Leader of the USA Fencing team met with representatives from Sheffield City Council and the Sheffield - Lighting the Flame partnership, only a week after a similar meeting with the US Boxing team. They were given a tour of the English Institute of Sport, Ponds Forge ISC, accommodation at the University of Sheffield and the Centre for Sports and Exercise Science at Sheffield Hallam University, in their bid to find a suitable location for training camps in the lead up to London 2012.

Mr Aichele said: "We know Sheffield is committed to sport and importantly, fencing with it hosting the European Championships in 2011. We've been really impressed with what the city has to offer."

Golf trio make it a first

HISTORY in the making for a trio of Birkdale golfers. Ted Brady, James Gregg and William Tickell have putted a 'first' for the school by reaching the regional final of the ISGA National golf competition.

They defeated Bolton School at Hallamshire and now meet Birkenhead School at a neutral venue in the New Year.

Brady set them on their way with a superb 9 and 8 success while Gregg won his match 5 and 4. Tickell came off at the 15 since the match was already won.

Sharp-shooter Stewart

IT was quite a day for teenage basketball sharp-shooter John Stewart. The 16-year-old scored 29 points for Sheffield Junior Sharks' Under-18s to help them to victory against Leicester and then a few hours later he top-scored for City of Sheffield Saints in their thrilling home win over Loughborough Student Cardinals.

Stewart bagged 27 points in his 27 minutes of court time, plus five rebounds and one blocked shot as Saints edged home by a single point, 83-82.

Arrows' double date

YOUTH v experience ... twice over. That's the state of play for Sheffield Arrows as they get ready for a double-header league and cup showdown against high-flying Derby Trailblazers.

The young Arrows side host their much more experienced rivals in a league clash at the English Institute of Sport on Saturday (6.15pm start) and 24 hours later they travel to Derby for a National Cup quarter-final.

Two of their rising stars Ben Murray and Semi Egboigbe made their mark for the Arrows in the 102-81 defeat at Bristol Flyers. Murray top-scored with 23 while Egboigbe netted 16.
