Nick Matthew will play his first major event of 2014 this week when he returns to one of his favourite tournaments on the Professional Squash Association schedule.

Matthew, aged 33, from Sheffield, will play England’s Adrian Grant tomorrow in the first round of the Tournament of Champions in New York City.

The week long event takes place in the Grand Central Terminal with Matthew, who returned to the top of the World Rankings late last year, seeded second.

Matthew won the tournament in 2012 when he beat fellow Yorkshireman James Willstrop in the final.

The pair are scheduled to meet in the semi-finals this year if the draw goes to plan.

Matthew has also finished runner-up on three occasions - 2011, 2009 and 2006.

France’s Gregory Gaultier is top seed.
