SHEFFIELD’S Nick Matthew begins his first major tournament of the season tomorrow at the US Open.
Matthew, aged 32, had the best possible start to the Professional Squash Association calendar with victory at the British Grand Prix last month.
He defeated Yorkshire rival and world No 1 James Willstrop in the Manchester final and the two are seeded to once again battle for the top prize at Drexel University in Philadelphia.
The US Open is one of three ‘World Series’ events before the World Championship in Qatar in December.
Matthew is a previous winner of the tournament in 2007 and was runner-up to Egypt’s Amr Shabana last year. His first round opponent is world No 10 Omar Mosaad.
