Defending champion Nick Matthew cruised into the second round of the Allam British Open Squash Championships, beating Finland’s Henrik Mustonen 11/8, 11/7, 11/3 last night.
Sheffield ace Matthew, a three-time winner of the event, admitted it was “amazing” to play at the KC Stadium, in Hull. He said: “I’m so pleased to be here and hopefully have a lot of local support.”
Matthew, the second seed in the tournament, next faces Laurens Jan Anjema. The Dutchman beat Ryan Cuskelly in four games to set up a meeting with Matthew tomorrow.
Karim Darwish is a potential quarter-final opponent for world No 2 Matthew.
