Super six get GB call for World Cup test

SIX senior members of South Yorkshire Orienteers have gained Great Britain selection for World Cup races this summer.

Jo Stevenson, Oli Johnson, Matt Crane, Nick Barrable, Neil Northrop and David Brickhill-Jones will represent their country in Norway and Finland.

They will also compete in selection races in early July in a bid to make the team for the World Championships in Hungary in August.

Club-mate Bryn Davies is already one step ahead as he's set to make his World Championship debut for New Zealand.

These selections follow a fantastic month of May in which five more orienteers were crowned British Champions.

Oli Johnson won the British Elite Long Title for the third successive year ... by just 13 seconds! Over the 97 minute race in the Forest of Dean he pushed Stockholm-based World Relay champion Graham Gristwood into the silver medal position.

Team-mates Matt Crane and Neil Northrop were fourth and fifth respectively and Australian Grace Elson took the bronze in the women's race with club-mate Jenny Johnson seventh.

In the British Sprint Championships around Nottingham University Campus Johnson finished fifth and Elson sixth while Rob Baker (fresh from a 2hrs 30mins London Marathon) was top man in sixth.

Cari Littler and Katherine Hall took silver and bronze respectively in the Junior Girls race and Michael Adams suffered the agony of a fourth place finish in the Junior Boys.

There were four winners in the final British Championships race in Leicestershire, the Middle Distance Championships - Aidan Smith (U-15 boys) Cari Littler (U-15 Girls) Dave Peel (Men's 40+) and Pete Gorvett (Men's 60+).

It rounded of an incredible Spring season for Aidan who has won virtually every race including British Long, British Middle and the Jan Kjellstrom Festival as well as finishing fourth in the World Schools.

Other SYO medallists: Men's Elite, Matt Crance, third; Women's Elite, Grace Elson, third; Girls U-13, Louise Adams third; Men's 35+, Nick Barrable third.

Anyone wishing to have a go at orienteering should go along to one of the club's Wednesday evening Park Races. The next one is at Notre Dame School Campus on May 20, details at: www.southyorkshireorienteers.org.uk
