Ponds Forge is hosting the best of British this week as the nation’s swimmers set their sights on representing their country at the World Championships next month.

The city is well represented with potential medallists in the event which doubles as the British Championships and the World Championship trials.

Olympians Ellie Faulkner and Rebecca Turner, who both swim for the City of Sheffield squad are set to do battle today over 200 metres freestyle with Faulkner also named in the 400m, 800m and 1,500m line ups. Turner opened the meeting yesterday in the 50m and she will also compete in the 100m.

Faulkner qualified well in the 800m heats yesterday and is set for a battle this evening against Jazz Carlin.

With double-Olympic champion Rebecca Adlington now retired the race between former Westbourne and All Saints school student Faulkner and Carlin will be one of the highlights of the meeting.

Matthew Johnson and Nick Grainger are two city swimmers hoping to make a break through this week.

The Championships finish on Sunday. Heats begin at 9.15am with semi-finals and finals from 5.40pm.
