RUSSIA put on a masterclass last weekend at Graves Tennis Centre as they won the Tennis Europe Winter Cup title with ease at under 12 level.

The team of Anastasia Potapova, Ekaterina Makarova, and Sofia Epur swept all before them as they whitewashed the opposition with a minimum of fuss.

Potapova is widely regarded as the finest player of her age in the world and she was a crucial figure as Russia beat Switzerland and Czech Republic en route to the final with Serbia.

Makarova, who has lost just one match this year which was against teammate Potapova, beat Ksenija Tmusic in the opening tie and Potapova gave Russia an unassailable 2-0 score when she sauntered past Olga Danilovic 6-1 6-1 in under 45 minutes.

Makarova and the third member of the Russian team, Sofia Epur, then dropped just one game to Danilovic and Tmusic in the doubles to seal their third 3-0 triumph of the weekend.

Great Britian, whose boys’ team won the equivalent event in Roznov pod Radhostem in the Czech Republic, couldn’t follow up their form from the qualifying competition as they finished eighth.

A 2-1 defeat against Romania in the opening round was followed by another loss by the odd point against Turkey.

And the scoreline was repeated in the play-off for seventh and eighth place against Moldova.
