Jonny Marray has the chance to reach his first Master Series quarter-final of the season this week after battling through a tough first round match at the Shanghai Rolex Masters yesterday.
Marray and doubles partner Colin Fleming saw off American Scott Lipsky and Mexican Santiago Gonzalez 3-6 7-5 10-7 to set up a last 16 tie with second seeds Marc Lopez and Marcel Granollers of Spain.
Their opening match had been rained off for two days earlier this week but when they eventually had the chance to play they managed to hold off a pair that had already beaten them once this year.
Marray said he’s now looking forward to the challenge of Lopez and Granollers: “We did well to hang in there.
“They were the better team and had many more break point chances than us for a set and a half but we played really well at the end to turn the match around in our favour.
“Again will be a tough match against the Spaniards.
“It will be very different match because the Spanish guys play more from the baseline but we’re looking forward to giving it a go.”
Last week at the China Open in Beijing, Marray and Fleming bowed out at the quarter-final stage against eventual champions Horia Tecau and Max Mirnyi.
The winning duo received a walkover to the final after Novak Djokovic and Stanislas Wawrinka withdrew.
