Tigers mauled by Caldy

Sheffield Tigers are still without a National 2 North win at Caldy after slipping to a 19-9 defeat on Saturday.

Caldy have only been beaten at home twice this season, by leaders Stourbridge and third placed Darlington Mowden Park.

“They have also beaten second placed Hull Ionians at Paton Field,” Tigers’ Nigel Dakin said.

“They had a well drilled mobile pack and backs with penetration. Tigers lost too much possession and in the conditions were never able to play their fluid attacking game of fifteen man rugby.”

Tigers opened the scoring with a penalty from Tom Outram in the fourth minute, but Caldy’s Richard Vasey levelled the scores.

And with half-time approaching, Caldy scored their only try of the match.

From a line out, the home forwards drove the ball over the Tigers’ try line for hooker Chris Jones to touch down.

Vasey added the extras to open up a seven point lead. Outram replied with a penalty straight away when Caldy were offside at a ruck and the half ended with a good kick and chase by Jamie Broadley and Peter Swatkins.

The start of the second half saw Caldy dominate, but Swatkins was checked as he chased his own kick ahead and Outram reduced the deficit to just one point after 55 minutes.

Vesey’s penalty eleven minutes later restored Caldy’s lead, and on 70 minutes he added another to put them out of sight.

Ed Simmons was replaced by Anton O’Donnell as Tigers at last had a chance to attack, following another obstruction by Caldy on a player without the ball.

Still Tigers could not breach a resolute home defence, and it was left to Vasey to deny Tigers even a losing bonus point as he slotted his fourth successful penalty with just two minutes to play.

Tigers: Chivers, White, Simmons (O’Donnell), Joel, Hayter (Walker), Argyle, Wragg, Pearson, Drage, Outram, Graham, Buchanan, Broadley, Dunn (Holmes), Swatkins

Replacements not used – Parker, Whitworth.

Tigers are away again this week, at Huddersfield, with a 3pm kick off.

Sheffield RUFC, meanwhile slipped to a narrow 8-7 defeat at Morpeth in the Northern Division - North 1 East.

Their next league encounter is on the 23rd when they entertain Pocklington.
