Transfer latest: O’Grady joins Reds on loan

SHEFFIELD Wednesday striker Chris O’Grady has joined Barnsley on loan until the end of the season, writes Dom Howson.

The Nottingham-born player notched six goals in 24 Championship appearances but has been deemed surplus to requirements by Owls boss Dave Jones. Ironically, O’Grady’s last strike for the club came in the 1-0 victory at Oakwell which ended a run of seven consecutive defeats.

Speculation is mounting Gary Madine will be allowed to leave Hillsborough on a temporary basis. Swindon Town and Coventry City are interested in signing the striker on loan.

Jones is running the rule over Jeffrey Sarpong. The former Ajax trainee is a free agent.

Barnsley, meanwhile, have granted right-back John Stones permission to speak to Wigan Athletic after the Championship outfit accepted a bid, believed to be in the region of £3 million. The England Under-19 international, a graduate of the Reds youth system, has featured 26 times this season. Barnsley have also released Lee Collins and Mido.

In League One, Sheffield United are expected to sign Barry Robson on a free transfer today, subject to international clearance. The experienced midfielder is thought to have snubbed Championship interest. But speaking ahead of their meeting with Coventry City tomorrow, Blades boss Danny Wilson has ruled out bringing in Charlton Athletic striker Bradley Wright-Phillips, admitting he is “no longer an option”.

But Wilson stressed: “Getting a goal scorer is of paramount importance. It will give everyone, including the fans, a real lift.”

The United chief also confirmed the club have received no bids for highly-rated duo George Long or Harry Maguire.
