HARRY Maguire last night insisted his long-term future lies with Sheffield United after agreeing an extended contract at Bramall Lane.

Maguire, who is now tied to the South Yorkshire club until 2015, was responding to claims that, rather than being a sign of commitment, this week’s development is simply designed to ratchet up his value ahead of the January transfer market.

Jordan Slew, another member of the squad which qualified for the 2011 FA Youth Cup Final, recently joined Blackburn Rovers in a £1million- plus deal less than six weeks after putting pen to paper on fresh terms.

Maguire said: “I want to play as high as I can with Sheffield United. It was very important to get this sorted out because now I can concentrate totally on my football and trying to get United promoted.”

Maguire, an ever-present in Danny Wilson’s starting 11 this term, was named the Football League’s Young Player of the Year for August.

The United manager, speaking ahead of today’s visit to Leyton Orient, admitted it is impossible to provide cast-iron guarantees about any player but insisted: “We want to develop him (Maguire) as a player

and, most im

portantly, we want to develop him as a quality player for us. What it does do is tell people that if they want to come in for our players then they’re going to have to be talking serious money.”

United, who yesterday allowed striker Danny Philliskirk to join Oxford on a short-term loan, climbed to fifth in the League One table following their midweek victory over Preston North End.

Chris Wilder, the Oxford manager and former United defender, said: “I know Danny likes him as a player and Philly knows our system well, too.

“Hopefully, this will be a ‘win win’ situation for everyone concerned.”

Corey Gregory has moved to Evo-Stik Division One South outfit Hucknall Town on work experience until January.
