VIDEO: What’s in Grass Roots this week

Over 150 South Yorkshire schoolchildren got a taste of netball action, with a major tournament at the Barnsley Metrodome - and netball is just one of the many sports in today’s Grass Roots, in the Sheffield Star!

Team Activ organised the event, as part of a nationwide Sport England School Games competition and the winning schools will now go through to a semi-final at the English Institute of Sport in Sheffield, where they will compete for the chance to play in the national finals.

The tournament, which attracted entries from Athersley South, Birkwood, Ladywood, Upperwood, Burton Road, Summerfields, Kexborough, Thurgoland, Wombwell Park Street, Richard Newman and Shawlands schools, saw 150 year five and six pupils make up 21 teams.

Elsewhere in the ‘paper, it’s a family affair for local four-year-old Nate Lafferty, who followed in the footsteps of two of his aunties to win the Water Babies Cup recently.

And on page 14 we have the story of the Nassa brothers, Ramzy and Pharys, who have both just turned professional - with three other siblings (Loua, 18, Hakeem, 17, and Raed, 16) hoping to do likewise in the near future!

We have the latest on Sheffield fencer Husayn Rosowsky’s road to Rio, a picture special from the British Indoor Athletics Championships at the EIS and the latest from the city’s two rugby clubs.

All the usual favourites are here, from badminton, bowls and basketball to football, ice hockey and angling - and, as ever, if you want your sport to be featured, get in touch!
