Betty Codona has dedicated her life to women’s basketball - and now the people of Sheffield are being invited to vote for her to receive a ‘Most Deserving Sports Hero’ award.
Betty, then a young PE teacher, founded the Sheffield Hatters back in 1962 - and is still helping to run the club now, overseeing its growth into a thriving community with three senior teams, four juniors squads and a mini-team.
She is the most successful coach in the history of British basketball, male or female, and was awarded an OBE 17 years ago.
“Being nominated for this award means a lot to me because it has come from my club, which I started,” Betty said.
“I have always tried to encourage teamwork and a family ethos and I believe that has led to our success and the best team of volunteers in sport.”
Voting for the award closes next Friday, July 11. To vote for Betty, visit www.motors.co.uk/most-deserving/sports/betty-codona.
