When a Sheffield referee shared centre stage with a snooker legend
"ABSOLUTELY superb, an awesome experience ..."
Such was the not altogether unexpected summing up from Sheffield referee Brendan Moore as he looked back on his Crucible debut at the World Snooker Championships this week.
Ironically, he was called into match action quicker than expected. Brendan was originally earmarked to open his account at the Home of Snooker with Monday's clash between Steve Davis and Stuart Bingham but he found himself taking charge of the final session of Peter Ebdon's thriller against Stoke potter Jamie Cope on the Sunday after the referee suffered a shoulder injury. The match went to the deciding frame before Ebdon edged his way through.
What a way to start and there were more nerve-shredding thrills to come in the Davis match as the veteran six-times champion pulled his way back from 8-3 down to level it up at 8-8 and then lost the next frame, which lasted 44 minutes, on the black. Bingham then held his nerve to complete a 10-8 victory.
"I enjoyed the whole Crucible experience. It was awesome, absolutely superb ... everything I expected and more," said Brendan.
"I get a match that goes to the deciding frame and then another absorbing contest featuring one of the all-time greats. It was a pity there had to be a loser."
Brendan took centre stage to oversee Ken Docherty's shock 10-4 defeat to Sheffield's EIS-based Liang Wenbo and was then involved in Ebdon's second round match against Mark King which was being played to a finish today.
