Holmesfield go into the tenth round of fixtures in the MPH Joinery Yorkshire & Derbyshire Cricket League against Sheffield Centralians this weekend holding a narrow four point lead at the top of Division One.
After reaching 208-5 at Wheatsheaf through the fine batting of William Hellewell and Jimmy Pearson, who scored 78 and 77 respectively, the league leaders held off a late fight back from hosts Parkhead to ensure they held a slender lead over Hollinsend Methodists.
Meths all-rounder, Ryan Sharp, hit a century with an unbeaten 117 in one of the weekend’s most outstanding performances as Hollinsend (234-7) before playing an influential part bowling out bottom club Grindleford for 75 when he took 5-3. Hollinsend travel to third bottom Hudnall on Saturday.
Grindleford’s task of hauling themselves out of the bottom two does not get any easier when they face current Division One champions Sheffield University Staff – who also lost at the weekend and have slipped a place to fourth in their bid to retain their title.
The Staff (112 all out) lost by five wickets to De La Salle, a result that moved their victors above them into third. Sam Wainwright took 4-32 and De La Salle will be looking to close the gap on the top two when they take on mid-table Parkhead.
In Division Two, Civil Service will hope for victory as they host Weston Park Hospital after a six wicket defeat against Collegiate last time out.
