Title-chasing Yorkshire have announced the capture of New Zealand batsman Kane Williamson, for the crucial last five County Championship matches of the season.

Yorkshire, who are ten points clear of second-placed Sussex in the Division One table, were forced to strengthen after Gary Ballance received an England Lions call-up.

Ballance, who clubbed 134 from 113 balls in the Yorkshire Bank 40 win over Unicorns on Tuesday, will miss next week’s crucial four-day clash with Nottinghamshire at Trent Bridge, and Yorkshire head coach Jason Gillespie said: “Kane is a quality player with a proven first-class record.”

Williamson, aged 23, scored a century on his New Zealand Test debut in India.

As well as losing Ballance, Yorkshire are without England trio Joe Root, Tim Bresnan and Jonny Bairstow, plus the injured Phil Jacques.
