Young Stocksbridge gymnasts scoop awards at Yorkshire Championships

Phoenix Gymnastics Academy, based at Stocksbridge Community Leisure Centre, enjoyed great success at the Yorkshire Championships.

Top honours go to the youngest member of the squad, six-year-old Emma Aldous, who was Yorkshire champion in the Under-8s intermediate 2008 category.

She achieved a score of 23.17 out of a possible 26.80.

Phoenix members won eight medals, three ribbons and seven rosettes.

In the U10s intermediate category Bailey Wells was first on floor .

Hannah Bullock was third on floor and fifth overall, Beth Aldous was sixth on vault and Lucinda Dyson was third on floor and vault and third overall.

In the U8s intermediate 2007 category, Amelia Thompson gained fourth on floor and finished an impressive seventh out of 18 and Amy Harvey placed an impressive eighth out of 18.

Head coach Kirstie Palmer said: “This is an amazing achievement for the girls as this was their first individual competition and was their first competition this year.

“This will be the first of many Yorkshire champions for this young club and we will go from strength to strength.”

The club have hig expectations from their next big date at Gymfusion on July 4.

* Kirstie is hoping to start a satelite club in the Bolton-on-Dearne area where she lives. She has been running preschool sessions at Hi Jinx Activity Centre in nearby Thurnscoe.
