New chief executive appointed at Sheffield Theatres

The Board of Sheffield Theatres have appointment a new chief executive.
The new chief executive Dan Bates will take up his post following the recent appointment of Sheffield Theatres new Artistic Director, Daniel Evans.

Dan's appointment begins in September succeeding Interim Chief Executive Donna Munday who has been leading the theatres since April. He will join the company while it continues Phase 2 of its £15.3 million refurbishment of the Crucible theatre and as it prepares to open later this year.

Dan's joins the company with an exceptional career in the theatre industry, having been Chief Executive at York Theatre Royal since January 2005.

Prior to York, he had an outstanding career at the West Yorkshire Playhouse, where he joined the company as a Stage Manager in 1987 and gradually worked in various different departments from Project Manager to General Manager through to his final role as Executive Director. Dan is also a trustee of Audiences Yorkshire (the Audience Development Agency for the region) and is an elected Council Member for the Theatre Management Association.

Chair of the Board, Dominic Shellard said:

Dan's credentials as a successful leader and producer are exemplary, and we are lucky to have secured his services for Sheffield. At a time of significant rebirth for the company, with the opening of the newly refurbished Crucible scheduled for later this year, Dan's vision and energy will be essential in leading the company and ensuring that we maximise all of the new opportunities available to us. We are delighted that Dan will be joining us and I wish him every success in his new role."

Newly appointed Artistic Director Daniel Evans said: "I'm thrilled about Dan's appointment. I feel that Dan's ideas of the kind of theatres he'd like to run closely echo my own. I feel very excited and confident that he'll lead the organisation into one of the most exciting periods of the theatres' history."

Commenting on his move Dan Bates said: "I am delighted to be joining Sheffield Theatres in September and am greatly looking forward to working alongside Daniel Evans and the staff team to lead the organisation, capitalise on the current success of the Lyceum and re-open the Crucible after a long period of refurbishment.

"I feel incredibly honoured to take up this role and am looking forward to completing the building project and ensuring we offer Sheffield fantastic theatre in brilliant refurbished facilities and return a vibrant producing theatre in the cultural heart of the city."
